How Much Does ISO 42001 Certification Cost in 2026?
June 27, 2026 · 7 min read
What ISO 42001 actually costs in 2026 — audit fees, tooling, and internal time — and where the real savings are.
ISO 42001 certification cost varies with company size, the number and risk of your AI systems, scope, and how much you automate. As with any ISO management-system standard, there are three buckets: certification body audit fees, tooling, and internal labor — and internal time is usually the biggest and most reducible.
1. Certification body audit fees
An accredited certification body runs your Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits, then annual surveillance audits. Fees scale with headcount and scope and are broadly comparable to other ISO management-system certifications. Because ISO 42001 is new (2023), the pool of accredited bodies is still growing, so get quotes early.
2. Tooling (compliance platform)
A platform replaces spreadsheets with a managed AIMS, an AI-estate inventory, automated control evidence, and a generated Statement of Applicability. ISO 42001 automation — see CATAAM pricing — pays for itself by collapsing internal time.
3. Internal time (the hidden cost)
Manually, an AIMS consumes significant effort: inventorying the AI estate, running AI risk and impact assessments, writing policies, implementing Annex A controls, and collecting evidence across the year. At a loaded rate, internal labor often dwarfs audit and tooling fees combined.
Where automation cuts the bill
- Automatic AI-estate discovery removes the manual inventory grind
- Native Annex A control validation replaces screenshot-and-spreadsheet evidence
- A generated Statement of Applicability removes the most tedious document
- Cross-mapping means one control can also serve ISO 27001 — see ISO 42001 vs ISO 27001
Estimating your total
Add audit fees + tooling + (hours × loaded rate). The fastest way to shrink the third term is automation. Use the ISO 42001 readiness guide to scope the effort, then automate the evidence-heavy steps.

- How much does ISO 42001 certification cost?
- It depends on company size, the number and risk of your AI systems, scope, and automation. Certification body audit fees are broadly comparable to other ISO management-system standards and scale with headcount and scope; tooling and internal time are additional. Internal labor is usually the largest cost and the one automation reduces most.
- What is the biggest cost in ISO 42001?
- For most organizations it is internal time — inventorying the AI estate, running AI risk and impact assessments, writing policies, implementing Annex A controls, and collecting evidence year-round. Compliance automation cuts this substantially.
- Is ISO 42001 more expensive than ISO 27001?
- The certification mechanics are similar, so audit fees are comparable. ISO 42001 adds AI-specific work (AI estate inventory, impact assessments, AI controls). If you already run ISO 27001, much of the management system is shared, which lowers the marginal cost.
